Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA)

DTRA has employed both SRI & Ravenswood for FlexTrain usage in seven Mighty Guardian exercises to support data collection for policy analysis and exercise control, as well as to provide a safety backstop that prevents fratricide between exercise and real-world security forces. 

Ravenswood supported DTRA by providing FlexTrain GPS-based, mobile/exportable live instrumentation system and personnel to setup, operate, maintain and recovery at six (6) different Military bases within the United States and one at Aviano, Italy. Exercise participants (personnel, vehicles, aircraft, targets) are instrumented with FlexTrain’s data-collecting player unit, which uses the 902-928 MHz radio band (though alternate frequency bands are available) to wirelessly transmit real-time GPS data and real-time casualty assessment (RTCA) data to the C2 system. The wireless data was encrypted if required. The C2 system’s tracking accuracy for GPS-equipped vehicles and personnel is within two to four meters.  

• Ravenswood personnel gathered requirements for generating the 2D and 3D terrain database and required entity models. 
• We conducted a site survey to obtain precise location and dimension data of all relevant structures or locations within the training area. 
• Our geovisualization analysts then combined this survey data with high-resolution aerial imagery to produce a highly precise and realistic virtual 3D model of the exercise area. Once available, the 3D terrain and entity models were loaded onto FlexTrain system computers prior to deployment, ensuring the modeling was integrated into the COP.
